A Basic Guide to Jump Starting Your Ride08.5.2012 | Okan Sengullu

Knowing how to jump-start a car is one of the most basic things you should know about car care, as a dead battery is bound to happen to you or a friend at some point. The good news is it’s an extremely simple procedure. If you don’t know how to jump-start a car, or if it has been a while since you have needed to, use the following information to help you out.

Confirm the Battery is Dead

To know for sure the battery is to blame for your stranded vehicle, pay attention to the reaction of the car when you turn the ignition. If you hear the engine cranking but not turning over, it could be the fly wheel on the starter. On the other hand, if you turn the ignition and absolutely nothing happens, jump-starting the car is your best solution.

Connect the Positives

Before you connect the jumper cables to the batteries, make sure both cars are off. Start by connecting the red jumper cable end to the positive terminal on the stalled battery. Then connect the other red end to the positive terminal on the good battery.

Connect the Negatives

Your next move is to connect the black jumper cable end to the negative terminal of the good battery. Now you can make your way back to the stalled battery. Do not connect the remaining black jumper cable end to the negative terminal of the dead battery, as this will cause sparks. Instead, connect it to an unpainted metal surface on the engine block or somewhere else under the disabled car’s hood.

Start the Good Battery

Turn the ignition on the good car and let it run for two to three minutes. Then, attempt to start the dead car. Once the stalled vehicle is up and running again, remove the cables in the reverse order and keep running the newly-started car’s engine for 30 minutes to recharge the battery.
