Steps to Follow After a Car Crash05.9.2019 | Okan Sengullu
If you get into a car crash (minor or major), it can be scary and nerve-wracking. After taking a few deep breaths, there are steps you should take to make sure everything is handled correctly. Check out Allstate’s tips and form to help you through the car crash.
Check for injuries on you or any passengers
If you or someone else in the car crash was injured, call 911 immediately. If you think you’re seriously injured, do not move. If you can move around, check on the other passengers in the car.
Find safety
When you can, move to the side of the road or a sidewalk. If you can drive your car safely, pull it over to the side of the road as to not cause a driving hazard. If you cannot, leave it be.
Call 911 and wait for help
If your car accident is a fender-bender or a major collision, call the police. It is important to contact them as in some states, it is legally required. The officer will fill out an accident report, document the scene, and you’ll be able to file a claim with your insurer. While you wait for help, turn on your hazard lights and use the emergency car kit road flares. This shows other vehicles that there is an accident and they should slow down.
Information exchange
Once you realize everyone is okay, exchange contact and insurance information with the other driver if another driver was involved. When you are exchanging information, do not discuss whose fault the accident was, as there is no benefit to this.
As mentioned above, the police will document your accident. Make sure you get a copy and take pictures of the damage. Take down names and allow the police to talk to any witnesses if they are present.
