Signs Your Car’s Tires Are Due for Replacement02.28.2013 | Okan Sengullu

Tires play an important role in the performance and safety of your vehicle. After all, tires affect your vehicle’s handling, braking, and major safety features. Between regular services from your auto mechanic, take the time to inspect your tires for signs of excessive wear. Here are three signs that your tires are due for replacement:

Worn Treads

Tire tread provides traction during wet or slippery conditions by allowing the tire to grip the surface of the road. Tires become unsafe when the tread has been worn to 1/16th of an inch or shorter. Modern tires feature tread wear indicator bars that allow you to easily see if your tires are getting worn out. If you notice that your treads are getting low, have your tires checked by your mechanic as soon as possible.

Damaged Sides

Tire tread is not the only part of the tire that experiences wear over time. The sidewall of the tire is also susceptible to damage. A simple visual inspection will allow you to determine if the outer surfaces of a tire are wearing out. If you notice any bulges or cracks in the side of the tire, it’s time for a replacement. Any weak spots on the outside of a tire could cause a blowout.

Excessive Vibration

If you notice that your vehicle is vibrating excessively under normal driving conditions, chances are that it’s time to replace your tires. When tire treads wear unevenly, the car’s weight is not distributed properly over the wheels. This uneven wear can cause vibrations while driving at slow or fast speeds. Unbalanced or misaligned tires can also cause vibration. If you are experiencing too much vibration while driving, have a mechanic check your tires immediately.
